CHOOSING THE RIGHT DRILL BIT FOR WOOD
When choosing the proper drill bit for attacking your wood project, there are several factors to be considered.
For small holes, under 1/4”, a HSS twist drill is suitable for most applications. For low volume, larger holes,
the spade bit (also known as a paddle bit) is an excellent choice. This is an economical means to drill holes
up to 1-1/2” in pine and other softwoods. For repeated and rapid hole making, the auger bit is superior in
every respect and will make short work of most construction timber. Available up to 18” in length, auger
bits are sold in standard steel and high-grade steel for use in nail embedded timber.
