The history of Solderless Terminals
Solderless Terminals, also known as crimp connectors, were first invented
in the 1940’s by Aircraft Marine Products, known later as AMP Corporation.
Until this time, wire connections were commonly soldered in place. Soldered
connections were subject to joint fatigue resulting from vibration and other
environmental factors. The introduction of solderless terminals created a gas
tight connection that is vibration resistant and free from oxidation and resulting
corrosion. A proper crimp will create what is known as a cold-weld, essentially
combining the two metals together into a singular mass.
